Deleting a Lab Template

How to delete an existing lab template.

Lab templates are reusable resources that make up the basic building blocks for templates and classes.  However, every resource eventually reaches the end of its useful life.  Also, while it's not much, there is some cloud cost to store inactive lab templates.  So, for all these reasons, it is possible to permanently delete a lab template once it is no longer needed.

Caution!
Deleting a lab template is a destructive operation and cannot be undone.  Once the lab template is deleted, it cannot be recovered
.

Prerequisites for a Delete Operation

There are prerequisite conditions that must be met before a lab template can be deleted.  To verify that a lab template can be deleted, open the Lab Template Details for the desired lab template by selecting it from the Lab Templates list and check the following:

  • The lab template cannot be running.  Ensure the lab template State is "Stopped".  If necessary, select Stop and wait for the lab template to fully stop before proceeding.

  • The lab template cannot be published.  Ensure the lab template Publishing State is "Draft".  If necessary, select Unpublish to return the template to the "Draft" state before proceeding.

  • The lab template cannot be associated to a class.  Expand Used In Classes to ensure the lab template is not used in any classes.  If it is, edit each associated class and remove the lab template from the class definition before proceeding.

  • You must have delete permission.  Users with Administrator privileges can delete lab templates created by anyone, but standard users can only delete lab templates which they created.

Delete the Lab Template

Once the prerequisite conditions have been met, the lab template can be deleted.  There are two ways to permanently delete a lab template.

1 - Delete from the Lab Template List

To delete a lab template from the Lab Templates list, select Delete (represented by the trash can icon) next to the lab template you wish to delete.  Then, select OK to the confirmation prompt.

2 - Delete from the Lab Template Details

Another option for deleting a lab template is to first select the desired lab template from the Lab Templates list in order to open the Lab Template Details.  Then, select Delete (represented by the trash can icon) and select OK to the confirmation prompt.

Deleting a lab template from the Lab Template Details is the preferred method since you can visually verify the delete prerequisites before continuing with the operation.
