Initial steps that tenant owners should take to begin using OrasiLabs

Now that your private OrasiLabs tenant is created, here are a few tips to help you and your team get up and running quickly.

Before You Get Started - Understand OrasiLabs

If you'd like an overview of what you can do with OrasiLabs, this video provides a high-level explanation of the main activities in OrasiLabs.  Be sure to share this video with anyone involved in your OrasiLabs trial!

Step 1 - Add any Additional Users

By default, the owner of your OrasiLabs tenant will be the individual that                 provided the registration information.  The owner will also automatically be the primary administrator who controls tenant settings (see below).  However, the owner can create additional users, as desired.  There is no limit to the number of users or students in an OrasiLabs trial.

To invite administrators or instructors, first open the User List by selecting Users in the User Management section.  Then, invoke the New User Wizard by selecting +New User.

To add students, first open the Student List in the Students section.  Then, invoke the New Student Wizard by selecting +New Student.  Note that students do not have to be predefined.  They can also be added to a class directly during or after a class is created.

Step 2 - Verify Tenant Settings

If desired, you can modify the basic tenant settings for your trial through the Settings section.  There are only 2 settings available during a trial, which is just a small subset of the options available in a paid tenant.

Confirm the tenant owner

As mentioned above, the original respondent automatically becomes the tenant owner and is also the default administrator.  If desired, you can name a different owner for your OrasiLabs tenant.  Any administrator defined in Step 1 above can be named as the new tenant owner.

Upload a tenant image

You can also upload an image to be displayed in your OrasiLabs tenant if you did not provide one when you filled out the tenant registration form.

 NOTE:

  • Settings are only available to Administrators that have been granted settings access and is not something that would be modified by most users.

  • Tenant owner and image settings describe above are the only settings you have access to as part of your trial. However, for paid plans, Settings contains many other options to help you customize the way your organization uses OrasiLabs.

Step 3 - Create a Template

Your tenant is now ready for users to begin creating training environments.  The basic building block in OrasiLabs is a Lab Template.  A lab template is a reusable virtual training environment consisting of one or more virtual machines, that is, operating system images.  Lab templates can also include additional non-visual resources like database servers and ports.

Once created and published, lab templates are used by classes to create dedicated copies of the environment for each class participant (i.e., instructors and students).  Participants use these environments to run the software necessary for the hands-on portion of a class.  Instructors might also use their copy to deliver the instructional portion of the class.

For details about how to create a lab template, see Creating a New Lab Template.

NOTE:

  • Lab templates must be published before they can be attached to a class.  Publishing a lab template essentially indicates that it is ready for production use.

Step 4 - Create and Deliver a Class

The last step in your trial is to create a Class.  A class in OrasiLabs is a specific training event that has a start date and an end date. This could be any activity that involves hands-on application training such as workshops, seminars, lunch and learns, onsite classes and virtual classes.

Classes in OrasiLabs can be created as either instructor-led or on-demand events.

  • Instructor-led classes have one or more instructors that deliver the class and monitor student progress.  All students in an instructor-led class share the same start and end date as defined by the instructor.

  • On-demand classes do not need an instructor to be present while students are active.  Instead, each student starts and stops their labs at their own convenience.  On-demand classes are typically active for an extended period of time and students register and participate as needed.  On-demand classes are ideal for a self-paced delivery model.

All classes in OrasiLabs are created using one or more published Lab Templates.  The lab templates define the class lab environment for hands-on activities.  Starting and stopping the class labs can be initiated by the instructor (in all class types), by the student (in on-demand classes), or automatically (based on a schedule defined by the instructor).

For details about how to create a class, see Creating a Instructor-Led Class or Creating an On-Demand Class.  For information about delivering instructor-led classes, see Delivering an Instructor-Led Class.

Congratulations!

You've just completed your trial of OrasiLabs.  Adding templates, defining classes, and delivering classes is the core feature set that most instructors need.  With just a few wizard-driven processes, it's quick and painless to get started in OrasiLabs.

However, there is much more to OrasiLabs and you're welcome to try it out!  Feel free explore other OrasiLabs features like the following:
