What can a lab manager do?

Part of Editing a class is a section called "Lab Managers", what is that?

Question:

What can a lab manager do?  I see this section in editing a class called "Lab Managers", what's that about?

Answer:

Well, you probably think a lab manager is a role, or a permission, but actually, it's not.  In OrasiLabs, it is an entity that combines a lab template with a role and a schedule.  In short, a lab manager associates a lab template with a class under a specific role, and provides the ability to set a schedule for starting/stopping labs.

The specific Roles are:

  1. Instructor & Student (recommended) - when class is underway, the instructor will have a lab with this template and so will each student.

  2. Student - each student will have one of these labs

  3. Instructor - only the instructor will have one of these labs

  4. Shared - this is a special role, for example, when the entire class needs to access an application that has a single app server instance you give the class a lab manager with this role

If you wish for the labs to start automatically when the class starts, the lab manager is where you set that schedule.  By default, the labs will start on-time.  However, you may set a schedule so that the labs start a little early to make sure they are up and running when class starts, or you might make them stop a little after class stops, so any stragglers can finish their exercises after class.
