Student Self-Registration

How to allow students to register themselves for a class.

Student Self Registration Overview

While students can be added to a class as part of the class set-up, there may be times you want to provide students with the link to the class and have them self-register. This can be helpful if students will be accessing OrasiLabs from a third-party application such as Zoom, Teams, or an LMS application.  There may also be situations where you want to invite a large audience to the class and have them register themselves if interested.

In these situations, using the self registration feature is a great alternative to adding students to a class as it's created.  Classes can have a combination of students that self register and students that you add.

Enabling Self Registration

Student self-registration can be enabled with the Allow Student Self Registration option in the Students section of the New Class Wizard, Class Edit, and Class Delivery pages.

Once enabled, you can configure additional self registration options with the cog icon.  You will also see the Copy Registration Link button which will copy the self registration link to the clipboard. This link can then be provided to students so they can self-register.

Self Registration Options

The following options can be used to further customize the self registration behavior:

  • Automatically approve student registrations - will allow anyone with the registration link to register and get access to class resources without any instructor approval.

  • Allow anonymous student registration - will allow students to register without providing a first and last name. The instructor will be able to see the email addresses used to register and the student will be assigned a random username.

  • Limit Registrations - will restrict student registrations by email domain or email address.

    • Add Email Domains - restricts student self registrations to certain email domains.

    • Upload Email Id's List - restricts student self registrations to a list of email addresses uploaded in a .txt file with each email address on a separate line.  As students self register, their email address will be validated against the uploaded list.

Approving Student Self Registrations

After registering, any students requiring approval are listed in the Pending Students tab of the Students section of the Class Edit and Class Delivery pages.   Instructors, class creators, or administrators can then Approve or Deny the registrations.   Email and in-app notifications are sent when students need approval.  Once approved, the student will be listed in the Registered Students tab.

Anonymous Self Registrations

When students are allowed to anonymously self register,  they can register with only an email address and are not required to enter their first and last name.   If the student is already known to your OrasiLabs tenant and appears in the main Students list accessible from the left-hand menu, their first and last name will appear in the Students section of the class.  If the email address has not previously been entered into the main Students list, we will generate a unique pseudonym for them, in the format of "Adjective + Animal" such as "Lawful Condor or Magnificent Gopher".

NOTE: If anonymous registrations are allowed AND registrations are limited by email domain or an uploaded list, anonymous registrations will only be allowed if they meet the email domain or uploaded list criteria.

Student Perspective

When students access the self registration link, they will be proved with a registration page where they will be asked for their email address.  If anonymous registrations are not allowed, they will also need to enter a First and Last Name.

If approvals are required, the student will see a message stating that they need to be approved before access can be granted.  Once approved, they will be taken to the Classroom.
