Logging into a Class as a Student

How to log into the student portal and activate a student lab.

Student Invitation Email

When students are enrolled into a class, an invitation email will automatically be sent to the student's email listed in the class enrollment.  The body of the email includes the appropriate course details, a button link to test the student's internet connection, and a button link to join the class.  Also, attached to the email is a PDF file with step-by-step login directions as well as an electronic calendar invitation (.ics file).

A sample email is shown below:

Connection Check

Before logging into the class for the first time, students are encouraged to run a simple test by selecting Connection Check from the invitation email.  This will open a new browser page that tests all of the networking components OrasiLabs needs.

For more details about the connection test, please see the article Running a Connection Check.

Logging into the Class

To login to the class, the student can select Join Class in the invitation email. This will open a new browser page with the Student Portal.  Using Join Class will automatically log the student into the class with their dedicated user name and access code (also listed in the email).

If for any reason the student can't use Join Class, the student can optionally open the class login page and enter login credentials manually.  To do this, the student should select or copy the hyperlink in the highlighted This Link text.  Opening this URL in a browser page will allow the student to enter the login credentials provided in the invitation email.

Student Portal

Once logged in, the student can use the Student Portal to access their dedicated class lab and to view the instructor presentation.  If the class has not yet started, a message will inform the student that the class is paused and will list the class start time.  If the class has been started, the student will see the lab thumbnail for their dedicated class lab.

For more details about how to use the Student Portal, please see the article Using the Student Portal.

Logging out of the Class

When the student is ready to leave the class, they can use Logout to close their active session.  Once the student is logged out, they can close all browser windows.

Please note that logging out of the class does not automatically stop the student's class lab.  The lab will continue to run until either manually paused/stopped or an applicable auto-pause/auto-stop threshold is reached.  Ideally, a student should manually pause their lab (by selecting Pause Lab on the Student Portal) before logging out.  This will force a snapshot of their progress to be saved and also avoids unnecessary run-time charges.  Instructors may also choose to pause/stop student labs at any time.
