How to define new base images from existing Amazon EC2 instances.
What is an Amazon Machine Image?
An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) provides the information required to launch an Amazon EC2 instance. An AMI represents a specific instance of a virtual machine running in the AWS cloud. You can reuse your existing AMIs in OrasiLabs by importing them as new base images, which can then in turn be used to create lab templates.
Create a Base Image from an AMI
To import an existing AMI, open Settings, and select Base Images to view the existing base images in your OrasiLabs tenant. Once displayed, select Add Image to invoke the Base Image Wizard.
Step 1 - Select Image
First, select the cloud account under which this new base image is to be stored from the list of available accounts. After selecting the cloud region from which the existing Amazon Machine Image identifier (AMI) is to be imported, enter the AMI for the instance.
Finally, select Next to advance the wizard.
Step 2 - Basic Information
If the AMI entered in the previous step is active and available, you can now enter the OrasiLabs name for the new base image. If the AMI is not available, an error message will be displayed. Then, select either "Linux" or "Windows" for the Base Image Platform to identify the operating system for the image.
Finally, select Next to advance the wizard.
Step 3 - Connection Settings
Now, identify how OrasiLabs is to connect to the new base image once it is started. You must select a protocol ("RDP", "VNC", "SSH", or "None") and enter a valid login username and password for the image. These settings can normally be copied directly from the Amazon EC2 Management console.
Finally, select Next to advance the wizard.
Step 4 - Finalize
The last step is to review and finalize the base image definition. The Base Image Wizard will display all previous option selections. If any of the options don't look right, select Back to change selections made in previous steps.
Once the options look correct, select Submit to create the base image.
Congratulations! You've just created a new base image. You can now use this base image as the starting point for new lab templates.
