Creating a Base Image from an existing Lab Template

How to define new base images from existing lab templates.

When you first start using OrasiLabs, you'll likely build one or more lab templates based on primary base images.  These lab templates will be used to deploy class lab environments, but often they have to be modified first.  For example, you might need to start the lab template so you can add required software, customize operating system settings, or install operating system updates.

Then, once you've customized a lab template, you might want to save that version and reuse it to create other lab templates.  This is most easily done by importing that lab template as a new base image.  It then becomes a reusable component available in the base image list when using the Lab Template Wizard.

For a brief example of reusing an existing lab template as a base image, view the video below.  For more detailed instructions, see the example below the video.

Create a Base Image from a Lab Template

To import a lab template as a new base image, open Settings and select Base Images to view the existing base images in your OrasiLabs tenant.  Once displayed, select Add Image to invoke the Base Image Wizard.

Step 1 - Select Image

First, instead of manually entering AMI details for the new base image, select Import from Lab Template.  This will allow you to select an existing lab template object in order to determine the AMI information.

Now select the desired lab template.  Note that only published lab templates are available to be promoted to base images.  If the lab template has not yet been published, you must publish the lab template so that it will show up in the list.

Also, if the lab template has more than one server component within it, you will have to specify which lab template component you want to import by selecting it.  If there is only one server component in the lab template, it will automatically be selected.

Finally, select Import from Lab Template to advance the wizard.

After you select the lab template component in the previous step, the Base Image Wizard will fill-in the relevant AMI information (cloud region and AMI identifier).  You will then still need to identify under which cloud account the new base image will be stored.

Finally, select Next to advance the wizard.

Now enter the OrasiLabs name for the new base image.  By default, the new base image will inherit the same name as the lab template from which it is being copied.  The base image name must be unique within the OrasiLabs tenant in which you're working. You'll also need to select either "Linux" or "Windows" for the Base Image Platform to identify the operating system for the image.

Finally, select Next to advance the wizard.

Step 3 - Connection Settings

Now, identify how OrasiLabs is to connect to the new base image once it is started.  By default, the new base image will inherit the same connection properties as the lab template from which it is being copied.  You must select a protocol ("RDP", "VNC", "SSH", or "None") and enter a valid login username and password for the image.

Finally, select Next to advance the wizard.

Step 4 - Finalize

The last step is to review and finalize the base image definition.  The Base Image Wizard will display all previous option selections.  If any of the options don't look right, select Back to change selections made in previous steps.

Once the options look correct, select Submit to create the base image.

Congratulations!  You've just created a new base image.  You can now use this base image as the starting point for new lab templates.
