Joining a Class Conference as a Student

How to view the instructor presentation and share audio

When delivering an instructor-led class, instructors usually need to share their active lab image and their audio.  OrasiLabs includes integrated audio/video conferencing or can link to 3rd party conferencing tools (like Zoom or Teams).  The instructor will setup the conference before class and the student will see either a digital classroom with a Join Conference feature or information about the 3rd party conferencing tool.

OrasiLabs Class Conferencing

1.  Joining the OrasiLabs Class Conference

For classes where OrasiLabs will provide integrated conferencing, all conferencing options are available directly from the digital classroom.  Once the instructor has started the conference, students will see an additional option to Join Conference.

When a student joins the conference, they will immediately begin seeing and hearing the instructor broadcast.  Students can also mute/unmute themselves so they can talk to the instructor.

2.  Placing the Instructor Broadcast in Picture-in-Picture Mode (PiP)

If desired, the student can toggle the instructor broadcast window into "Picture in Picture" (PiP) mode.  This places the instructor broadcast into a movable, resizable overlay window that floats above the primary display.  PiP mode allows the student to perform other work (like open the student lab) while still watching the instructor's broadcast.  With this feature, the instructor can use "Follow Me" exercises where the student mimics the instructor's actions to accomplish a task.

To overlay the instructor PiP window, the student simply clicks on the My Labs tab and then uses the Expand or Full Screen buttons to enlarge their lab.  The instructor's broadcast window will float above their lab so that they can watch the instructor while they work in their lab.  The overlay window can also be moved or resized as desired.

3.  Using the Student Control Panel

Once a student joins an OrasiLabs class conference, a pop-out student Control Panel will appear at the top of the lab window (represented as an arrow pointing down).  By selecting the down-arrow icon, the Control Panel will "slide out" from the top of the window. From here, the student will have access to common actions such as Mute/Unmute and Request Help. To collapse the Control Panel, the student can simply click the arrow button again (which will now be pointing upward) and the Control Panel will "slide into" the top of the window once again.

3rd Party Class Conferencing

If a class is going to use a 3rd party conferencing tool, the instructor can provide the necessary web conferencing details, including login links and/or dial-in numbers.  If enabled by the instructor, students will then see these conference details in a pop-up window when they join the class. This information is also available at any time by selecting the View Details link on the left side of the student portal.  The student can then either select the appropriate link or open another browser window and manually enter the web conference details to join the 3rd party conference.
